Simple Tea Ritual, Drinking Your Tea Mindfully

Tea has become an important part of my morning and afternoon ritual. I usually keep my daily tea ritual pretty simple ( However I do appreciate a proper tea ceremony at the right time and place).  The simple tea ritual certainly helps me survive my busy and stressful daily tasks. I say “survive” because I had only drunk strong coffee and alcoholic beverages until a few years ago, which either got me too hyper or too tired. Drinking tea is a relatively new routine in my life and it works beautifully by far. It makes me feel more relaxed, it helps me gain more energy, it makes me feel more positive……

I normally drink black tea ( or rose petal tea) in the morning and green tea or Puerh tea in the afternoon. Here is my simple tea ritual for every day, there is really nothing complicated or fancy about it. But one most important thing is to drink your tea mindfully, be patient and stay aware.

Be quiet and set your mind on it

Take a few deep breaths slowly, keep yourself away from any distractions. Notice you are about to perform a tea ritual for yourself, stay aware of your attention.

Boil water

When you start to boil the water, remind yourself you are starting to make your tea. Remind yourself this is the process of the ritual. Listen to the water boiling in the kettle, stay focused.

Brew 

Pay attention to the sound when you pouring the boiled water into the teacup. Observe the transformation of the tea leaves and the color change of the water. Stay focus, stay aware.

Smell

Bring the cup close to your nose and sense the special aroma from the tea. Think about where the leaves grow, how they were dried and processed,

Sip 

Take the first sip slowly and let it embrace your senses. Pay attention to the taste in your tongue and the taste in your throat. Be aware of your feelings at this moment. Visualize the benefits of the tea for your body and mind.

I normally feel rejuvenated and refreshed after a simple tea ritual. If you feel tired and stuck in your daily work, try this simple practice. It can be a great way to relax your body and free up some space in your mind 🙂
